FIRST TIME STAR MAZDA RACER RICHARD KENT WINS RACE, AMERICAN JOHN EDWARDS
WINS CHAMPIONSHIP IN 2008 STAR MAZDA CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES FINALE
Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca / Oct. 18 – It was a thing of both myth and legend, a race that
saw the mysterious stranger come out of nowhere and win from the pole in his first ever time
in the car or on the track… but the eserving, hard-working, charming young American who put
together a spectacular season goes on to win
the championship and the huge, coveted prize
that goes with it.
Richard Kent, an English karting champion with
a background in the European Formula Palmer
Audi series and a few Formula Renault U.K.
races earlier this season, put the #77 Andersen
Racing / Traka / Allied Building Supplies Mazda
on pole during a gloomy, cold morning
qualifying session. In the warmth of the
afternoon, he started in the lead, held it
throughout and crossed the finish line 2.171 seconds ahead of John Edwards in the #7 AIM
Autosport/ Mobil1 Mazda. Edwards, however, with four wins under his belt already, started
the race having only to score a podium finish to win the championship, and for the personable
young racer, it was 'mission accomplished.'

-- THE TWILIGHT ZONE RETURNS --
First-time Star Mazda Racer Richard Kent qualifies on pole, three drivers
under the track record on a cold, foggy morning at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca
Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca / Oct. 18 – So apparently the first practice session on Thursday
morning in which first-time Star Mazda racer Richard Kent set the fastest time wasn't an
aberration after all; in qualifying on a cold, foggy morning at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Kent,
an English karting champion with a background in the European Formula Palmer Audi series
and a few Formula Renault U.K. races earlier this season, put the #77 Andersen Racing / Traka /
Allied Building Supplies Mazda on pole for the final race of the 2008 Star Mazda Champion ship
presented by Goodyear with a fast lap of 1:19.935.
"We did some testing in the car at Mosport, but this is my first time racing at Mazda Raceway
Laguna Seca so naturally I'm delighted with the results so far," said Kent. "We were fast in the
first practice and had a brilliant setup for qualifying thanks to my engineer Remy Lantigne. We
didn't really change anything for the conditions, just ran the setup we had from yesterday and it
worked perfectly. The cars are great to drive, very fast with good feedback and you certainly
couldn't ask for a more professional team than Andersen Racing."

AFTER A 'TWILIGHT ZONE' SESSION IN THE MORNING STAR MAZDA PRACTICE, THE NORMAL ORDER OF THINGS RE-ASSERTS ITSELF – PRETTY MUCH – IN THE AFTERNOON
Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca / Oct. 17 –
With the first practice session of the
morning delivering a shock to the system
for everyone on the grid in the form of a
total newcomer setting fast time his first
time in the car -- Richard Kent, an English
karting champion with a background in the
European Formula Palmer Audi series
drove the #77 Andersen Racing / Traka /
Allied Building Supplies Mazda to a fast lap
of 1:21.074.
In the warmth of a hazy, somewhat humid afternoon, however, the normal order of things reasserted
itself – more or less – with American Joel Miller turning the best time, a 1:21.661 in
the #20 JDC Motorsports / Mazda / K&N Air Filters Mazda. Miller is the 2007 Skip Barber Pro
Series Champion and is racing in the 2008 Star Mazda Championship courtesy of the
MAZDASPEED Motorsport Driver Development Ladder scholarship.

SURPRISE NEW NAME AT THE TOP OF THE TIME SHEETS IN FIRST STAR MAZDA
CHAMPIONSHIP PRACTICE SESSION AT MAZDA RACEWAY LAGUNA SECA
Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca / Oct. 17 -- After most of a season of seeing the same half-dozen
names at the top of the time sheets in practice, and race results, a new name has popped up –
Richard Kent, an English karting champion with a background in the European Formula Palmer
Audi series. Driving the #77 Andersen Racing / Traka Mazda, Kent – in his first time at Mazda
Raceway Laguna Seca and his first outing in a Star Mazda race car – set a fast lap of 1:12.074.
This is almost 3/10ths of a second clear of the best lap set by championship points leader, and
four-time race winner, American John Edwards. He turned a 1:21.373 in The #7 AIM Autosport/
Mobil 1 Mazda. In third was another 4-race winner, Irishman Peter Dempsey, currently third in
the championship battle. He turned a lap of 1:21.615 in the #21 Andersen Racing/LotusWorks/
Center Jewellers.ie/Quayside.ie/ Allied Building Products Mazda.

-- AND THEN THERE WERE THREE –
A trio of top young racers, two Americans and an Irishman, are in the fight
of their young careers for one of auto racing's most coveted prizes –
the MAZDASPEED Motorsports Driver Development Ladder scholarship
The 2008 Star Mazda Championship season has been simultaneously lop-sided and exciting;
two drivers have won eight of the 11 races so far, but each of them has experienced the sort of
adversity that either builds character or de-rails careers.
American John Edwards (right), who raced in the Atlantic Championship
last year but lost his ride, decided to compete in the Star Mazda
Championship this year in hopes of winning his way back to Atlantic in
2009. Driving the #7 AIM Autosport / Mobil1 Mazda, he won his debut
event from the pole in Round 2 at Miller Motorsports Park, following up
with wins in Race 2 Portland, Race 1 at New Jersey and Road Atlanta.
But he missed the first race and finished 19th in Race 1 at Portland.
